The Essence of Leadership Institute

Take a look at how to strengthen your foundation for leading the curriculum process and develop quality curriculum that will provide the underpinnings for curriculum review and analysis.

Day 1: Establish a Foundation for Leading Curriculum Design

Big Idea:

Develop and sharpen essential skills for proactive and transformational curriculum leadership.

Goals:

  • Examine the key elements to curriculum design that focus on identifying the essential components of your curriculum, explore the school structures and processes in place and develop a strategic plan to manage the process
  • Formulate a guide for structuring a solid Core Leadership Team and identify their role in supporting and leading your curriculum process
  • Explore up-to-date best practices and the lessons learned from actual Atlas users as to what it takes to lead a successful mapping process

Key Take-Away Items:

  • Development and/or review of your curriculum template to ensure key initiatives are being met
  • Development or refinement of a Core Team Charter
  • Create a leadership map that will act as the guide for curriculum goals

Day 2: Driving Quality Curriculum Development

Big Idea:

Advance the quality of your curriculum by defining the curriculum elements and identifying exemplar units to drive the process.

Goals:

  • Determine the characteristics of quality curriculum
  • Define unit quality by examining the best practices of other schools
  • Develop a process for creating and identifying quality maps that will act as the model for curriculum discussions
  • Explore ways to develop collaboration and communication centered around the curriculum
  • Build upon your leadership map to integrate your next steps which will catapult the quality of the curriculum

 Key Take-Away Items:

  • Develop mouse-over definitions, a rubric or an exemplar unit to define quality curriculum
  • Identify or develop quality units that will act as the guide for discussing and developing quality curriculum
  • Add quality curriculum goals to your leadership map

Day 3: Strategies for Engagement

Big Idea:

Apply the understandings gained from the previous workshop days to expand the knowledge and resources needed to support the curriculum process at your school or district.

Goals:

  • Reflect on the goals you have set in the leadership map and determine what resources are needed to support them
  • Work with other participants to brainstorm ideas that will support the curriculum process
  • Create a resource that will drive the curriculum work at your school or district

 Key Take-Away Items:

  • Develop a strategic tool that will support the needs and goals of the curriculum process
  • Previous participants have focused their day on one of the following:
    • For those transitioning to a new school that uses Atlas, familiarize yourself with your new school’s curriculum so you can hit the ground contributing
    • Continue to map out your curriculum mapping process for the academic year in the administrative map, providing an accessible framework for direction and agility
    • Walk through the structure and use quality tools created in the workshop
    • Integrate new functionality in your Atlas system to reflect the current curriculum initiatives at your school

Who Should Attend?

Formal or informal curriculum leaders (curriculum coordinators, administrators, heads of department, core team members, or teacher leaders) would be perfect for this institute.  This institute is great for leaders new to Atlas or the curriculum process or those who are looking to reinvigorate their current process.
